Next year, Henshincon is bringing back your favorite actors, closer with its return online in HENSHINCON X TOKU SPIRITS ONLINE! For our first set of honorable guests we bring you Toshihide Wakamatsu AKA Gai Yuki/Black Condor of Chōjin Sentai Jetman.
What's Jetman about?
Chōjin Sentai Jetman takes place in 1991 on the Earth Ship, the command center for an international defense agency called Sky Force, the guardian of peace on Earth. On the ship, scientists have developed "Birdonic Waves", a newly developed technology which gives the subjects superhuman abilities. These experiments, called "J-Project" were successful. Aya Odagiri, the director of the project, chose five elite Sky Force officials from Earth to use this technology.
However, the Earth Ship is suddenly attacked by Vyram, an evil outer-dimensional organization bent on inter-dimensional domination. They successfully destroy the ship and seemingly kill Rie, a "J-Project" candidate member, in the chaos. Ryu Tendo, one of the Sky Force officers, was successfully exposed to the Birdonic Waves, making him the first Jetman, the Red Hawk. The remaining Birdonic waves that were meant for the other four officials become scattered across Earth, hitting four civilians instead. Odagiri and Ryu successfully escape and begin searching Earth for the four remaining Jetman, training them to aid in stopping Vyram's plans of conquering our dimension.
Gai Yuki/ Black Condor
Gai was a confrontational and obnoxious loner who hated being ordered around and adored fighting. Like the others, he was a member because he had received the power. He was not happy about it, but he did come through for the team every time. His combat skills match Ryu's, though he preferred to fight dirty, as he sometimes resorted to tactics such as grabbing his foe by the crotch to perform an overhead lift and toss.
Gai fell in love with fellow Jetman, Kaori. She appealed to him in part because of her gentleness and class, for her spirit and bravery which he recognized, and also because unlike almost every woman he met, she would not be his for the taking. He flirted with her repeatedly, but with no results- eventually suffering from the frustration of his unanswered feelings. Slowly, he began to put himself at risk to protect her, and it quickly became an addiction.
While he and Kaori were still together, Gai had learned about Ryu's fiancée, Rie, and had to watch a man he'd come to believe in slowly fall to pieces. He finally accepted being depended on by his teammates, even though he still resisted being what people forced him to be all his life.
Three years later, Gai found out that Ryu and Kaori had fallen in love and were getting married. While buying flowers for his beloved friends' wedding, he stopped a mugger from taking a woman's purse. The mugger was humiliated and took out a switchblade, and stabbed Gai in the stomach; the mugger, mortified that he actually stabbed someone, ran away.
Knowing he was going to die this time, Gai did not hide from his friends, but made it to their wedding too late for the ceremony. He made it to the reception and sat on a bench, where he greeted Ryu. Ryu saw how weak Gai was, but Gai lied that it was just a hangover. He thanked Ryu for everything and gave Kaori his blessings from a distance, as he was too weak to get up. Former teammate Ako took a picture of the two friends sitting on the bench before Ryu left to go take pictures with all the other guests. Gai took the time to smoke a cigarette, before finally succumbing to his wound and dying on the bench.
Although meeting a sad end, Gai Yuki's name lived on as Ryu and Kaori's son was named after him. In an episode of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, a gravestone shown with "Yuki Gai" engraved on it confirms his death. Gai Ikari, Goikai Silver, speculates that each of Gai's former teammates visit often, as his grave had items that can be traced back to them.
